#Bont News
Issue 5
Welcome back everyone to the fifth issue of the club’s newsletter. It’s races, races, races at the moment - hard to keep up with everyone’s efforts! I’m going to dedicate this entire edition to everyone’s racing exploits - so no Coach’s Corner or Pro News this month (although the Tri geek in me could write an entire edition on the remarkable Sub7 Sub 8 Project -55kph for 180K anyone?).
The thing that struck me when I was putting this together over the month - was the smiles! We are certainly a happy group of triathletes!
(apologies right from the off if I haven’t got a picture of you racing/I’ve forgotten someone; or even a race!! It’s been hard keeping up this month!)
Swansea Sprint Triathlon 29th May
This was the season’s kick off for many people, and they were looking to take advantage of a sheltered dockland swim and fast, flat bike out along Swansea seafront, before a canter over a friendly final 5K.
Tata Steelman June 12th
(After a covid hiatus) which event hasn’t! The ever-popular standard distance race returned, albeit a month later than its usual chilly early May time. PYB tri were out in force looking to take advantage of one of the flatter courses around - a strong westerly wind would prove challenging for those bike times, but turning back eastwards, people were flying!
Leeds WCTS Standard/Sprint 11/12 June
Up in Leeds, it was the British National Standard Championships. Tim Tri Cymru were sending a team and our very own Paul Belcher had qualified to race in his age group. Despite suffering from a ligament tear in his knee, Paul raced very well and came 5th in his age group - an amazing performance!
Rather less glamorously, I won a free place in the sprint race courtesy of a British Triathlon online draw……
Challenge Wales Fishguard - June 18th
The Fishguard half returned this year, but in a new guise of the Challenge brand, which brought a pro-field as well as the usual Welsh Middle Distance Championships. The pro men’s race was won by Aussie ITU star Aaron Royle, whilst the women’s race was won by Lucy Byram.
What would a race be without a wonderful PYB Tri support crew!!!
Fishguard Sprint Triathlon Sunday June 19th
The Sunday saw the next instalment of the Welsh Triathlon Super series with plenty of points up for offer.
Dragon Ride June 19th
Sunday saw an early start for a few club members as they took on the challenge of the Dragon ride. Jon and Neil did the (not insubstantial 157K route), whilst Dave took on the unimaginable 295k. For all three it was an enormous effort - astonishingly, Neil had completed the Challenge Wales half iron distance race the day before, whilst Jon continued his IMW preparations with a quick 10K brick run after a long day in the saddle.
Perhaps the most mind-blowing performance of the weekend was Dave completing not just 295K of riding but also over 4000m of climbing (that’s half an Everesting - for those in the know). Dave finished the ride in a little over 13 hours! Makes you think about what did you do for 13 hours on Sunday?!
