I joined PYBTC back in 2020, I was already a keen open water swimmer and decided I fancied giving triathlon a go! Unfortunately, lockdown hit pretty soon after I joined so club sessions were cancelled. However, this turned out to be a perfect time to get a road bike - such quiet roads! The club also put on virtual challenges which were much-needed motivator to keep moving. When restrictions eased it was lovely to get back to club sessions, which all improved my fitness and confidence, along with being lots of fun. Everyone is so supportive and encouraging, which is great especially when you’re struggling your way up the Bwlch!
By May 2022,events were back in full swing, and I felt ready to take part in my first triathlon in Swansea. Before I started, I was pretty nervous about the transitions, but the club held transition sessions which helped ease my nerves. Having an idea of what to expect really helped me stay calm. The event started with a 750m swim in the SA1 Dock. Having taken part in a number of swimming events this was always going to be the easiest part for me; it flew by and I was on to the bike leg in no time. I was most nervous about the bike ride(I d say it’s my weakest of the three disciplines) but at the end of the 20km I felt like I could carryon forever.
The cheering and support from the crowds was brilliant and gave me such a boost, plus cycling a flat route was a welcome change from the hills of Bridgend!
The run was a stunning 5km along the coast, lined with supporters cheering us on, with a finish in front of the National Waterfront Museum. As I turned the last corner and saw and heard the crowds, it was amazing! It gave me that final burst of energy for a sprint finish, to cross the finish line as a triathlete at last. Everyone had said there's no feeling like it, and I found out they were right! The high I felt lasted all day and I can safely say it wont be my last triathlon. My next goal is a Olympic distance event, and I know the club will help me get there!
